Overview

Meat clamp, cow horn and silver-plated, France, 1900s

An outstanding example of French culinary craftsmanship from the early 1900s, this antique meat clamp—known in French as a Manche à Gigot—was designed to hold a leg of lamb or ham securely during carving. Its sharply angular, hand-carved handle is made of richly striated cow horn, shaped into a faceted polygonal form that adds both grip and aesthetic interest. The result is a tactile, sculptural object that balances utility with elegant design.

The clamp mechanism itself is silver-plated metal, made in the pre-stainless steel era. It is in excellent antique condition, with a tight, well-functioning joint and only the slightest signs of age, testifying to the quality of its construction. These tools were essential at formal meals in the Belle Époque and early 20th-century France, allowing roasts to be carved at the table with both cleanliness and ceremony.

This is not only a rare find for collectors of antique tableware, but also a beautifully preserved and usable object for hosts who value tradition and character at the table.
