Overview
Tray, polyplast with gilding, Florentine, Italy, 46 cm, 1960s–1970s
This exquisite Florentine tray from mid-20th century Italy reflects centuries-old decorative tradition, rooted in the Renaissance workshops of Florence. Measuring 46 × 37 cm, it is made of lightweight polyplast — a durable material with the appearance of hand-carved wood, but far more practical for everyday use, as it can be washed.
The surface is embellished with genuine gold foil and intricate hand-painted scrollwork in ivory, sage green, and soft ochre tones, evoking the elegance of the 16th–17th century while retaining a light, versatile feel. The tray’s scalloped edges and symmetrical foliate motifs exemplify the “Florentine technique” — a multi-stage process involving gilding, polishing, painting, and aging that once required up to nine steps to complete.
Though traditional wood-based versions are becoming increasingly rare, this polyplast tray retains the same visual richness with added practicality. Ideal for serving, displaying perfumes or jewelry, or as a decorative accent on any table or wall.
