Overview

Iris pitcher and basin set, ceramic, France, ca. 1860s
This striking blue and white ceramic pitcher and basin set is a rare antique from the Fenal Frères factory in Pexonne, France, dating to the mid-19th century. Both pieces feature vivid iris floral motifs, meticulously hand-printed in cobalt blue. The basin measures approximately 39 cm in diameter, while the generously sized pitcher holds up to 3.5 liters.

The base of the bowl bears the mark “Iris FF Pexonne France.” Fenal Frères, founded in 1857, was active until 1897 and known for its distinctive production method—eschewing clay and lime in favor of terracotta fired exclusively with wood and later coal. This gives the pieces a unique finish and tone, distinct from other ceramics of the period.

This set is not only an exquisite decorative object, perfect for a country house interior or a refined bathroom, but also functional: the pitcher can still be used to serve drinks, and the basin makes an ideal fruit or salad bowl. A rare collector's piece of French ceramic history, offered at a very reasonable price for its age and beauty.
