Overview
Teapot, silver-plated, Fraget, 1848 Poland
This teapot has a uniquely shaped spout and an ebony handle.
It is in very good condition, with minor dents. The silver plating is mostly intact.
As indicated by the marking on the bottom, it was made in 1848 by the Polish silversmith "Fraget", founded in 1824 by Józef Fraget, a renowned pioneer in the production of electroplating silver.
In the early 19th century, immediately after the Russian victory in the war with Napoleon, there was a large influx of immigrants from Europe to Russia. Among the numerous craftsmen, there was a small number of talented jewelers, who moved from France and Germany to Warsaw, the capital of the newly annexed (1815) Kingdom of Poland, to organize the production of silver-plated tableware. In 1850-1860, the first Russian factories were built there that produced cheap silver-plated tableware using the cutting-edge technology of electrolysis. By the end of the 19th century, almost all Russian production of silver-plated tableware and utensils was concentrated in Warsaw.
