Tea cup and plate, set of 5, Societe Ceramique Maestricht, Holland early 20th century
Overview
Tea cup and plate, set of 5, from dutch manufacture Societe Ceramique Maastricht.
Beautiful ceramic tea set, decorated with a damask rose motif, in monochrome grey transferware, hand painted by hand with 24k gold accent details. The transferware technique is a printing method which was developed in England in the mid-18th century.
On the back there is a stamp "Made in Holland. Maastricht ceramic company." surrounding a lion. The entrepreneurs Winand Nicolaas Clermont and Charles Chainaye founded a pottery in the Wijck district of Maastricht in 1851. Their business was taken over in 1859 by the Belgian engineer Guillaume Lambert and transformed into a limited partnership. Four years later, it became a partnership with limited liability, generally known as the “Ceramic Company”.
This tea set shows little defects such as darkening, but no cracks or scuffs.
