Overview

Tray, papier-mâché and lacquer, Japan, 1970s, length 62 cm

A striking example of late 20th-century Chinoiserie craftsmanship, this Japanese tray is made from lightweight yet durable papier-mâché, finished in glossy black lacquer and adorned with an extraordinary hand-painted dragon scene in vivid gold, orange, and green. Measuring 62 × 33 cm, with a side height of 3 cm, it offers both generous surface area and visual impact.

The composition features a dramatic golden dragon emerging from stylized emerald waves, surrounded by curling clouds of fire — a powerful symbol of strength and protection in East Asian tradition. Every line is painted with precision, from the dragon’s flaming whiskers to the sea’s rhythmic motion, showcasing the refined artistry of Japanese decorative techniques.

With its curved integrated handles and gently raised sides, the tray is as practical as it is beautiful — ideal for serving, displaying objects, or anchoring a bar or sideboard. It remains in very good vintage condition, with only minor wear to the lacquer surface that does not detract from its overall brilliance.

A rare and atmospheric statement piece at a very attractive price. Free delivery available on orders over 20,000₽ (or €200). Combine items to take advantage. Payment in euros or dollars is available upon request.
