Overview
Teapot, silver-plated, France, 19th century, Victor Saglier
This richly detailed silver-plated teapot is the work of celebrated Parisian silversmith Victor Saglier (1809–1894), whose mark — “VS” with a boat, the symbol of Paris — appears clearly on the base. Crafted in France in the 19th century, this piece reflects the opulent decorative taste of the time while maintaining a practical, balanced form.
The teapot’s classic silhouette is elevated by ornate detailing: it stands confidently on four sculptural feet that end in finely cast horse hooves — an unusual and imaginative flourish. Delicate vegetal motifs trace along the spout, feet, and handle, adding texture and richness without overwhelming the form. The handle, elevated and expressive, balances visually with the high spout and elegant lid.
The silver plating shows areas of wear, with patina and thinning consistent with age, which enhances its antique character. The knob on the lid is slightly bent but secure; the teapot remains stable and well-balanced overall. Despite the minor flaws, its structural integrity and decorative value remain strong — this is a beautiful and rare example from a highly regarded French workshop.
