International Silver Company began its history in 1898 and ended in 1981.
When the International Silver Company was founded in 1898, it was already a colossus. It was the economic downturns of 1893, 1894 and 1896 that convinced smaller silver companies to band together to take advantage of economies of scale. The businesses that merged to form the new company produced about 70 percent of the silverware produced in the United States.
Despite its success, some of the business decisions that allowed the company to expand beyond silver ultimately led to its downfall. The venerable International's cookware division's last day of business was March 20, 1981, and the last remnants of the silver business were sold by 1983.
